What skills will I learn?
You will learn about the different types of applique, how to set your machine for straight stitch and satin stitching and the effect of altering upper and lower tensions on your work. We will explore the look of thread sketching on raw edge appliqued motifs, in addition to finished edges, how to cut out and apply designs, and how to applique without pre-cutting any design pieces!
What will I make?
This class is about encouraging you to try many new techniques rather than completing a project. In the morning you will create a portfolio of instructions and samples of a few different types of applique. In the afternoon we will applique a design of your choice onto some fabric to make a panel for a cushion front.
What do I need to bring?
Bring along a piece of plain fabric which will be your background and any small coloured fabric scraps you have lying about. About 50cm is enough. Don’t worry if you don’t have scraps – I have more than a few! If you have coloured threads in your sewing box then bring them along in case you need to finish your project at home. Interfacing, Bondaweb and Fusible Fleece for your project will be included. Teas and coffee will be provided but as this is a day class you will need to bring a packed lunch, or take a trip into town to visit one of the many café’s or bakeries.
How will I be taught?
We will discuss the different types of applique, different methods of achieving the same result, and tips for success. Each technique will be demonstrated by the tutor before you get to work……or play …..on your own samples! You will enjoy being able to create something truly unique!
